You know what else the quarry does? Explosions! Around 7pm, loud sirens blared for about a minute straight. When you enter the campground, there are signs telling you to listen to 1100 AM when sirens sound. The station was pure static so hopefully we didn't miss some alert of an impending zombie apocalypse, but shortly after the sirens ended there was a large explosion just across the river, loud enough to feel vibrations in the campground and close enough to see a large plume of rock dust rising across the river. I imagine for any veterans with PTSD, this would not be a calming camping experience.
Excellent campground, and NO usage fee like the Nebraska State Parks.
Such a beautiful place to fish!! Park is kept pretty clean as far as trash and park rangers are awesome!!
This is the worst campground I've ever been to. You know what's directly south of the campground across the river? The Fort Calhoun Quarry. It is currently 11:30pm on Friday night and apparently this is prime time for rock quarrying. It sounds like we are in the middle of a construction zone. Constant beeping of trucks backing up, honking, and I'm assuming what is the sound of large boulders tumbling down a conveyor belt and being broken up into gravel by large jackhammers. I live in a city of 150,000 people and I am used to noise. This is louder than nighttime in the city.
Nice and quiet except from the quarry across the river who were blasting while we were there! Also the water is orange (apparently due to high iron levels). I drank it though and I'm still here to tell the tale!
The Steamboat Museum is just 3 minutes away in Nebraska. Our family will definitely be back soon.
Half the park in sun, 10am to 7 pm. Our spot had a lot of space. Crushed stone parking was kind of a mess, tracked in camper. Our electric boxes had 50amp, 30amp and 20amp outlets in the box. Overall a nice place.
(Note: I wrote this last night and can confirm that the quarry noises continued all night. Still going, in fact, at 6am on Saturday.)
Alas, this is all on the other side of the river. As for the campground itself, there are very few trees nor any sense of seclusion or privacy from neighboring campsites. Our two closest neighbors have very bright blue lights outside of their RVs and one of them has a white floodlight aimed directly towards our campsite. Very reminiscent of the street light outside my house in the city - at least there I have blackout curtains.
I think I would have a more pleasant experience and be closer to nature camping in my own backyard on the 4th of July.
